The University of Texas at Tyler will hold Ethics Week Feb. 9 – 13, Dr. Howard Patterson, vice president for student affairs, announced.

Among highlights throughout the week, the UT Tyler Center for Ethics will hold its third annual Ethics Bowl, where 10 participating East Texas area high schools will form blended teams to debate various ethical dilemmas.

“As far as we can tell, this is the only high school ethics bowl in Texas,” said Patterson, who also serves on the center’s executive council. “It is a fun day of friendly competition that challenges the students’ ability to quickly synthesize information and formulate a plausible rational to support or reject each scenario. We are grateful to the Fair Foundation for helping to make this event possible.”

Participating schools are Arp High School, Bishop TK Gorman High School, Brook Hill High School, Bullard High School, East Texas Christian Academy, Grace Community High School, John Tyler High School, Lindale High School, Robert E. Lee High School and Sabine High School.

UT Tyler 2015 Ethics Week scheduled events are:

Tuesday, Feb. 10

• 9 – 10 a.m. “Learning How to Speak Your Mind When You Know What’s Right” University Center theater. Open to all UT Tyler students.
• Noon – 1 p.m. “Giving Voices to Values: A New Approach to Values-Driven Leadership” UT Tyler Ornelas Activity Center. Open to community leaders and UT Tyler faculty.
• 4 – 5 p.m. “Giving Voices to Values in the Classroom and Beyond” UC Ballroom. Open to all UT Tyler faculty.

Wednesday, Feb. 11

• Noon – 1 p.m. “A Discussion About Legal and Ethical Aspects of Social Media in Higher Education” UC Ballroom. Features keynote speaker Michael Donley, UT Tyler university counsel. Lunch will be provided.

Thursday, Feb. 12

• 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Ethics Bowl. UC Ballroom. Each team will participate in four debates, and the top three teams will be determined by the end of the day. Volunteers from UT Tyler and the greater Tyler community will serve as judges. An awards presentation will follow.

Keynote speaker for the Tuesday presentations will be Dr. Mary Gentile. Gentile serves as the director of Giving Voice to Values and a senior research scholar at Babson College. She also is a senior adviser at the Aspen Institute Business and Society Program and an independent consultant. Previously, Gentile was a faculty member and manager of case research at Harvard Business School.
