Dr. James Lumpkin has been presented the Academy of Marketing Science’s 2014 Harold W. Berkman Service Award, Dr. Ross Sherman, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced.

Lumpkin is the UT Tyler F.M. and Fannie Burke professor and dean of the College of Business and Technology. He has served the university since June 2014.

The award, which is given in recognition of long-term service to the academy and the marketing profession, has only been bestowed 10 times in the academy’s 42-year history.

“Dr. Lumpkin fits the award in every way,” said Dr. Barry Babin, AMS Board of Governors chair. “He has demonstrated career-long leadership to the academy. He has served in a variety of leadership roles including tenure as AMS president during a time of significant expansion as an international association and as the academy’s journal, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, grew in stature and prestige.”

The award is the academy’s most prestigious and bears the name of the AMS founder, Babin added.

Lumpkin has been an active member of the academy since 1980. He has been involved in all phases of the academy including serving on the review board for JAMS, served as a conference paper reviewer, track chair and the annual conference program chair. He has been named JAMS “Outstanding Reviewer” and received an annual conference “Best Paper” Award. Lumpkin also was named “Distinguished Fellow” in 1992.

He began his leadership service to the AMS in 1988, when he was first elected into a vice president position. He was elected president of the academy for the 1990-92 term, and he currently serves on the Board of Governors.

Lumpkin has directed two research panels and published two books, numerous chapters, monographs and edited volumes. He also has published more than 125 research articles and papers including seven in JAMS and served as the marketing editor for the Journal of Business Research.

Including UT Tyler, Lumpkin has held endowed chairs at Baylor University, University of Mississippi and University of Louisiana – Lafayette. He also previously served as dean at Bradley University, Oklahoma State University and Louisiana Tech University.

Lumpkin holds a master of business administration and bachelor of science degrees, both from Stephen F. Austin State University as well as a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Arkansas.

The Academy of Marketing Science is the premier, marketing academic, professional organization in the world. The AMS has some 1,300 members worldwide. The AMS’s flagship journal, The Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, is one of the most respected and cited academic journals in business.
