The University of Texas at Tyler Music Department will hold its first concert featuring work from UT Tyler and high school students in the composition and composer mentor programs, Dr. Michael Thrasher, UT Tyler School of Performing Arts director, announced.

The public, double-bill “UT Tyler Composer Mentor and Composition Readings Concert” will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in the UT Tyler Braithwaite Recital Hall.

“New music is created every day in your town – come see and hear the result of months of hard work on the parts of our local high school participants in the UT Tyler Piney Woods Young Musician Collaborative Program, mentor students from UT Tyler’s composition program and performers from the UT Tyler music student body,” said Dr. Kyle Gullings, UT Tyler assistant professor of music theory and composition, who serves as the program coordinator.

The first half will feature works composed by program participants attending Grace Christian and Robert E. Lee high schools. The latter half will feature original compositions by UT Tyler composition students, who serve as the mentors.

Volunteer UT Tyler music students will perform the high school composers’ works. The mentors’ works will be performed by a woodwind quintet consisting of regional professional musicians, including Thrasher on clarinet and UT Tyler instructor Sue Bugg on flute, Gullings added.

A question and answer session will follow.

A Community Engagement Seed Grant through the College Music Society’s CMS Fund sponsors the UT Tyler Piney Woods Young Musician Collaborative. The membership and leadership of the College Music Society, as well as the CMS Fund, are dedicated to advancing the ideals of education in music through meaningful community engagement projects.
