UT Tyler Students to Participate in Women’s Leadership Institute

Two undergraduate students from The University of Texas at Tyler will participate in the 2015 National Education for Women Leadership™ Texas Summer Institute June 7 – 12 in Austin, Dr. Martin Slann, College of Arts and Sciences dean, announced.

Freshman psychology major Marisa Chantharayukhonthorn of Austin and freshman finance major Kia Moore of Houston were among 26 students selected from 17 colleges and universities this year.

The institute is a non-partisan intensive six-day residential program that not only educates young women about politics and policy-making but also seeks to inspire them to get involved in the political process. Hosted by the UT Austin Center for Women & Gender Studies, the program is open to outstanding undergraduate women enrolled in any Texas college or university and Texas residents attending out-of-state schools.

“Marisa and Kia are extraordinary students, and both women clearly have brilliant futures in leadership and decision-making roles. I am proud that they will represent UT Tyler in Austin at the institute,” said Dr. Robert Sterken, UT Tyler associate professor of political science and campus program coordinator.

Students meet with successful women leaders to discuss politics, public policy and the importance of women’s leadership. They also will participate in skills-building workshops on networking, public speaking and strategic communication and network with a diverse group of women who share a commitment to shaping the public agenda and making a difference in their communities.

The institute also provides students with a safe space where they can respectfully address issues of diversity and discuss the difficulties associated with leadership in a diverse society.

First created 24 years ago by Rutgers University, the programming is now a national initiative in more than 25 states.
