The University of Texas at Tyler Department of Health and Kinesiology will present its fifth annual physical education workshop Friday, Oct. 9, Dr. Yong Tai Wang, College of Nursing and Health Sciences dean, announced.

The all-day event, “PE2theMAX – Maximizing Skills, Participation, Teamwork and Fun,” begins at 8:30 a.m. in the UT Tyler Herrington Patriot Center’s Patriot Gym.

Cost is $75 for educators and professionals. Cost for college students enrolled in teacher certification programs is $40. Lunch will be provided. To register, visit uttyler.edu/hkdept/.

This year’s featured clinician is J.D. Hughes, who was named both the 2005 and 2015 “Georgia Elementary PE Teacher of the Year.” SHAPE America also named him the 2015 “Southern District Elementary PE Teacher of the Year.”

“The workshop will feature a stimulating assortment of fun-packed, educational games and ideas not only focusing on participation and involvement for the large class, but also ones that will intrigue, engage and motivate students,” said UT Tyler associate professor Dr. Wycliffe Njororai Simiyu, event co-coordinator. “The presentations provide all inclusive and fun activities, which in turn minimizes discipline problems and maximizes participation.”

Professional development continuing credit will also be given for workshop attendance, Njororai Simiyu added.

Hughes is a national board certified physical education primary school teacher from Mirror Lake Elementary School in Douglas County, Ga.

He has written and developed several curriculum books and DVDs for teaching and maximizing proven activities and skills to use in physical education including, No Standing Around in My Gym, PE2theMax: Maximize Skills, Participation, Teamwork and Fun; and HyPEd Up: Taking Physical Education Games to the Next Level.
