UT Tyler Industrial Technology Student Chapter Earns Top Awards at National Conference

The University of Texas at Tyler's Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering student chapter won the prestigious Outstanding Student Chapter Award for a record fourth time in five years at the association's national conference, Dr. James Lumpkin, College of Business and Technology dean, announced.

The criteria for winning the Outstanding Student Chapter Award is based upon the number of active student members as well as the range and number of activities they coordinate or sponsor throughout the year.

In addition, student chapter president and industrial technology major Danny Belknap of Van earned third place in the Virtual Welding competition.

"I am really proud of my students for receiving this year's awards, which was quite an undertaking and honor. They worked really hard throughout the year and sacrificed countless hours of their time to coordinate or assist with numerous community service projects, fundraising activities and social events," said Dr. Heshium Lawrence, who currently serves as the faculty adviser for the university's student chapter and was elected as ATMAE's national student division president in 2014.

The UT Tyler chapter members competed with more than 50 other ATMAE student chapters across the country to earn these prestigious awards.

Graduates of the UT Tyler industrial technology bachelor's program are employed with leading companies in East Texas and across the United States, such as Trane Inc., AAON Inc., Chicago Bridge and Iron, Chevron, Lockheed Martin and Eastman Chemical. Nearly 100 percent of graduates find jobs in the industrial technology field immediately following graduation.

The university recently expanded its offerings in industrial technology by launching a bachelor of science degree at the Longview University Center.

UT Tyler also offers the bachelor of science in technology degree with surveying and mapping emphasis, as well as a master of science industrial management.
