UT Tyler Announces 2016 Juried Student Exhibition Awards

The University of Texas at Tyler recognized 10 art students during the 2016 Juried Student Exhibition Awards Reception.

Chelsea Bretherick of Tyler received the Art Excellence Award, a scholarship created by an anonymous donor to help the non-traditional student. Lisa Horlander of Tyler received the Christopher Lyon Memorial Scholarship, an annual award that celebrates the passion and dedication of the late faculty member.

Awards also were presented to certain works of art included in the annual exhibition, chosen by guest juror professor Elizabeth Yarosz-Ash from Midwestern State University. Sean English of Quitman won Best in Show for his piece Emerge, a monotype.

Other awards are as follows:

  • First Place: Jeremy Haynes of Tyler, for Opening Up to the Conversation, ceramic
  • Second Place: Brittany Lea Taylor of Hallsville for Self, acrylic on canvas
  • Third Place: Lorianne Hubbard of Bullard for Soul-Signal, charcoal on
  • Paper
  • First Honorable Mention: Lamina Miller of Gladewater for Bird and Paper,
  • paper sculpture
  • Second Honorable Mention: Diego Loya of Tyler for Rarámuri, mixed media assemblage
  • Third Honorable Mention: Kirsti Smith of Canton for Dear Jane, mixed media sculpture
  • Fourth Honorable Mention: Lisa Horlander of Tyler for Ariel, charcoal on paper
  • Fifth Honorable Mention: Kathy L. Murphy of Holly Lake Ranch for Woodland Fairy Tea Set, ceramic

The annual Juried Student Exhibition showcases the best work by UT Tyler art students during each academic year. Students submit up to three pieces for consideration. This year's exhibition will remain in the Meadows Gallery through Friday, July 29. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by special appointment.
