UT Tyler 2016 LSAMP Summer Research Academy Underway

Students from The University of Texas at Tyler and Tyler Junior College are participants in the UT System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation 2016 Summer Research Academy under the mentorship of faculty from the UT Tyler Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Technology and Engineering.

The System-wide program, in its 24th year, is supported by National Science Foundation funding and provides undergraduate research experiences to encourage students from underrepresented populations to pursue graduate-level studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. TJC is UT Tyler's LSAMP community college partner.

UT Tyler student fellows with their research fields and faculty mentors are listed by hometown.

ALBA – Taylor Ramirez, electrical engineering, Drs. Mukul Shirvaikar and Neil Dong.

HOUSTON – Kyle Cartwright, electrical engineering, Dr. Melvin Robinson; and Madison Wilson, mechanical engineering, Drs. Nelson Fumo and Chung Hyun Goh.

LEANDER – Roberto Martinez, civil engineering, Dr. Harmonie Hawley.

LINDALE – Megan Seawright, biology, Dr. Joshua Banta.

TYLER – Joseph Luiso and Leighanna Mindt, biology, Drs. Jon Seal and Katrin Kellner.

VAN – Ashley Broadbent, biology, Dr. Lance Williams.

CALIFORNIA – Michael Linhorst, mechanical engineering, Drs. Fumo and Goh.

TJC students conducting research on the UT Tyler campus this summer are Anna Armstrong of Whitehouse studying biology with Dr. Kate Hertweck; James Hanson of Odessa studying civil engineering with Hawley; and Ricardo Tamayo of Tyler studying cyber security with Dr. Tom Roberts.

Each student receives a fellowship stipend for their participation, and faculty mentors receive funding for supplies and materials to support their student's research activities.

As part of their fellowship, the SRA students will participate in videoconferences involving all LSAMP fellows and mentors across the UT System. The students will also give poster presentations highlighting their research project results at both the academy's conclusion and the annual UT LSAMP Student Research Conference in September at UT El Paso.

UT Tyler associate professor of computer science Dr. Stephen B. Rainwater directs the university's LSAMP program. UT Tyler faculty Dr. Neil Gray, professor and chair of chemistry and biochemistry and professor of biology Dr. Neil Ford also contribute in supporting roles on the program's local advisory committee.UT Tyler adjunct senior lecturer and TJC computer science faculty member Gigi Delk serves as TJC's LSAMP campus director.
