The University of Texas at Tyler has received a federal grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration to enhance advanced nurse practitioner programming, Dr. Michael Odell, vice president for research and technology transfer, announced.

The grant is anticipated to total $2,099,933 over three years. With the funds, the university will partner with local and area clinics to further develop UT Tyler students as nurse practitioners. Initial partners are Cherokee County Health Department, Hiway 80 Rescue Mission, Special Health resources and Walmart Clinics.

"Using an academic-practice partnership model, the School of Nursing and our partners will plan to collaborate on a journey to produce practice-ready family nurse practitioners to serve diverse, rural and underserved vulnerable populations," said Dr. Sandra Petersen, UT Tyler professor and the project's principal investigator.

"Guided by the 'True North' Model, which is based upon the patient-centered medical home model, the collaboration will intentionally create access to an interdisciplinary preparatory process for students that emphasizes primary care, wellness, prevention, quality improvement and practice education while providing for the development of competent preceptors in the process," she added.

As part of the project, a standardized, evidence-based Clinical Performance Evaluation tool will be developed and completed by faculty and preceptors. It will provide feedback to students on a regular basis regarding performance and readiness to practice. A creation of an online evidence-based preceptor training program in a pre-test/post-test format will measure and enhance knowledge, skills and abilities of preceptors, in addition to providing free continuing education credits to preceptors.

A committee of nurse practitioner program faculty, preceptors and students will lead efforts to begin this fall.
