The University of Texas at Tyler Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy has advanced in the process of becoming fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.
The ACPE has granted the Fisch College of Pharmacy candidate status, which means graduates of the college are now permitted to take the pharmacy licensing exam. Programs are not considered for full accreditation until they graduate the first class, which for UT Tyler will be in 2018.
"This is the highest level of accreditation a developing program can receive before graduating its first class," said Dr. Lane Brunner, founding dean of the Fisch College of Pharmacy. "We are extremely proud of and grateful to our faculty and staff for their commitment to developing a quality program, and we can't thank our pioneer class enough for entrusting their education to us. We have some of the brightest future pharmacists in the country."
Almost 10 years in the making, the UT Tyler Fisch College of Pharmacy is designed to fulfill a workforce need and provide East Texas students access to a course of study that is not available locally or regionally.
The Fisch College of Pharmacy will produce more in-state pharmacists to serve local retailers and hospitals, particularly those in rural areas where the shortage is greatest, in place of the current high percentage of out-of-state pharmacists who often return to their native home states after training in Texas pharmacies for a couple of years. Business, healthcare and education leaders throughout the East Texas region support the program and the benefits it will bring.
"We are humbled by the outpouring of support from the East Texas community," said Dean Brunner. "We are especially thankful to the Ben and Maytee Fisch Foundation for its endowment and continued support as our program develops as a leader in academic pharmacy. We are also grateful to the Brookshire Grocery Company for its support facilitating the completion of W.T. Brookshire hall, the award-winning home of the Fisch College of Pharmacy."
