UT Tyler Announces Director for Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

DelelloThe University of Texas at Tyler has named Dr. Julie Delello director of its Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Dr. William Geiger, vice provost of academic affairs, announced.

A UT Tyler School of Education faculty member with more than 20 years of experience as a practicing K-16 educator and administrator, Delello will oversee the center which promotes campus conversations among faculty regarding teaching and learning that are inspired by new developments in higher education. These conversations may include topics such as service learning, engaging undergraduate students in research, team-based instruction and project-based learning.

"The position of director is an important leadership role intended to help build learning communities of faculty throughout the university," said Geiger. "It will facilitate the coming together of faculty across different disciplines to mentor and be mentored, to teach, and to learn and to conduct research on the scholarship of teaching and learning."
Members of UT Tyler's Academy of Distinguished Teachers will assist Delello as center advisers, Geiger added.

Delello previously worked in K-12 school districts in a variety of administrative roles, including curriculum director, technology director, coordinator of a Response to Intervention program and federal programs director.

Among accolades, she was awarded the UT Tyler White Fellowship for Teaching Excellence, J. Burns Brown Fellowship of Excellence, UT Tyler Kappa Delta Pi Teacher of the Year, Golden Apple Educator Award for Best Practices in Staff Development and Curriculum Initiatives and a National Science Foundation Scholarship.

Serving UT Tyler since 2009, Delello holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in science and technology and a science and technology specialist certification, both from Texas A&M University. She also holds a master's degree in education administration from UT Permian Basin as well as superintendent and mid-management certifications.
