The University of Texas at Tyler is recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education's Almanac of Higher Education as one of the fastest developing institutions nationwide in academic research, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.

Over a 10-year period, UT Tyler has grown its total research spending by 1,273 percent, and the university has grown its federal research spending by 3,095 percent. Those increases put UT Tyler third in the nation among all universities – regardless of size – in both of those categories between 2004 and 2014, according to the latest Almanac.

Top UT Tyler research areas within the period are education and biology.

"We're very pleased with these standings in the Almanac," said Dr. Michael Odell, vice president for research and technology transfer. "For the last decade, research has been a focus area for the university, and regarding federal dollars, we've been very competitive at the national level."

In 2004, university annual research grants were less than $1 million. In recent years, that amount has been as high as $12 million.

"This is evidence that UT Tyler faculty are becoming successful in competing for external grants. As a result, our research expenditures have increased at an impressive rate," Odell added.

The Chronicle of Higher Education's annual Almanac brings context to data with detailed tables and analysis on faculty, students, finance and all 50 states. The publication is available online to Chronicle subscribers.

The Almanac's sources include the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Census Bureau, National Science Foundation, associations and organizations that track higher education and institutions that administer national tests. The Chronicle is the leading source of news, information and jobs for college and university faculty members and administrators. For additional information, visit chronicle.com/.
