The University of Texas at Tyler will hold a Financial Aid and Scholarship Night for current and prospective students and their families to help guide them through the federal student aid and scholarship search process, Sarah Bowdin, assistant vice president for enrollment management, announced.

UT Tyler Financial Aid and Scholarship Night will be 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 in the University Center Ballroom. Dinner will be served, and attendees can receive door prizes. To register, visit uttyler.edu/financialaid.

Previously, the U.S. Department of Education has made the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available for students to complete by January 1 each year. The availability date is moving to October 1 beginning this year. During this event, UT Tyler will provide assistance for students and their families to complete the FAFSA online and the Texas Application for Student Financial Aid.

"This process can sometimes be confusing for parents and students who have never completed the FAFSA before. Staff will be here to assist them," said Scott Lapinski, UT Tyler director of financial aid. "We will also provide a general financial aid information session and assistance with scholarship searches, application processes and financial planning."

The financial aid session will discuss how to read an award letter, the different types of awards and what they mean; and how to complete a Special Circumstance form for a life-changing event, he added.

Students and parents who do not have a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID are strongly encouraged to apply for one prior to their arrival to sign the FAFSA electronically. This may be completed online at https://fsaid.ed.gov.
