Mary "Emma" Williams of Tyler and Lindsay Niebel of Van are 2016–17 history scholarship recipients at The University of Texas at Tyler.

Williams received the Edwin Morgan Smyrl and Frank H. Smyrl Endowed History Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Niebel received the Phil Stacy Jackson History Scholarship in the amount of $750. Both will be recognized during the Spring 2017 History Banquet.

The Edwin Morgan Smyrl and Frank H. Smyrl Endowed History Scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Frank H. Smyrl, the first historian to join the UT Tyler faculty, and his brother, historian Edwin Morgan Smyrl. Frank Smyrl was the founding department chair and dean of the UT Tyler College of Liberal Arts. The Phil Stacy Jackson History Scholarship honors the memory of historian Phil Stacy Jackson, a distinguished UT Tyler history graduate.

The Department of History presents these scholarships to declared history majors in recognition of excellent academic performance and for encouraging the study of history at UT Tyler.
