Dr. Desha Makiya of Conroe has been selected by The American Nurses Association Center for Ethics and Human Rights to serve on an advisory committee to the Moral Resilience Professional Issues Panel.

Makiya is a Fall 2016 graduate of The University of Texas at Tyler doctoral program in nursing.

According to the panel, the goal of strengthening moral resilience is to address the phenomena of moral distress. Moral distress occurs when nurses know what the morally right thing to do is, but institutional, procedural or social constraints make doing the right thing nearly impossible. Moral distress threatens the core values and moral integrity of nurses and other health care providers.

The Advisory Committee members will provide feedback, additional information and advice to ANA and the Steering Committee regarding the direction of the policy development. Dr. Makiya's dissertation, chaired by The University of Texas at Tyler's Dr. Susan Yarbrough, was titled "Moral Distress, Leadership Integrity, Ethical Climate and Turnover Intent in Critical-Care Nurses."

"We are very proud of Dr. Makiya and how well she will represent The University of Texas at Tyler on the national level," said Dr. Barbara Haas, The University of Texas at Tyler College of Nursing and Health Sciences associate dean.

The Ph.D. in Nursing was among The University of Texas at Tyler's online graduate nursing programming that was recently ranked best in Texas and 13th overall nationally by U.S. News and World Report.
