Texas State Historian to Present at The University of Texas at Tyler Longview University Center

The University of Texas at Tyler Longview University Center will host a lecture featuring Texas State Historian and award-winning author, Dr. Bill O'Neal at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21.

O'Neal will present a program about the colorful saga of Texas cowboys and longhorn cattle, of trail drives and vast ranches. The cowboy culture spread from Texas throughout the American West, and the cowboy became the world's most popular folk hero, with a deep appeal that continues today in western music, rodeos, cowboy clothing, western art and cowboy churches.

Bill O'Neal's great-grandfather herded cattle up the Chisholm Trail during the 1870s and 1880s. As the author of more than 40 books, Bill has written widely about Texas cowboys, ranching, range wars and frontier cattle towns. His most recent writing award, the A.C. Greene Literary Award, was presented at the 2015 West Texas Book Festival in Abilene. In 2012 Bill received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Wild West Historical Association, and in 2007 he was named True West Magazine's Best Living Nonfiction Writer. O'Neal has also appeared in TV documentaries on TBS, The History Channel, The Learning Channel, CMT, A&E and The American Heroes Channel series Gunslingers.

O'Neal will be on hand to greet the public in the lobby of Garland Hall located at 3201 N. Eastman Rd. in Longview. Admission is free, and the lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m.
