Students in The University of Texas at Tyler Model United Nations Program were recognized at the 2017 National Model United Nations Conference in New York, New York.

The delegation representing Bosnia and Herzegovina received an "Honorable Mention" distinction. It is presented to the top delegations and acknowledges outstanding 'character' involvement, teamwork, leadership, speaking and negotiating abilities as well as knowledge of the issues and proper usage of procedure rules.

Students honored were head delegates Chris Nafrady of Longview and Melissa Salgado of Tyler; Caleb Morrison of Whitehouse, Grace Parker of Farmers Branch, Zak Wellerman of Hallsville, Jorge Plata of Houston, Judah Bozeman of Waxahachie, Alaydrain Cofer of Dallas, Prix Berry of Carthage, Rheagan David of Amarillo and Melissa Ford of Bolivia.

In addition, Nafrady, Ford, Morrison and David were awarded "Outstanding Position Papers." This award was in acknowledgement of their hard work in research and writing specific topics in their committees.

Head delegate Salgado also was chosen to serve as chair of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice for the conference. During this time, she was responsible for the procedural functions of the committee to lend aid to the director and assistant director to ensure the committee ran effectively.

More than 5,000 students from colleges across six continents were in attendance this year. Celebrating its 90th year, NMUN-NY is the largest intercollegiate Model UN simulation.

The University of Texas at Tyler has sent delegations to NMUN-NY and other conferences in the United States and world beginning in 2006, when professor and department chair Dr. Marcus Stadelmann began the program.
