Student artists at The University of Texas at Tyler were recognized for outstanding work during the 2017 Juried Student Exhibition Awards Reception at the Meadows Gallery, Michelle Taff, gallery coordinator, announced.
The annual student exhibition showcases the best work by University of Texas at Tyler graduate and undergraduate art students during the academic year. Students submitted up to three two- or three-dimensional pieces that were then chosen by this year's guest juror Barbara Frey, an art professor in Texas who is known for her work in ceramics.
Awardees are listed with title of work and its description.
Best in Show – Lilah Shepherd of Longview, "I Dream of Forms Mini-Installation," ceramic and mono print installation.
First Place – Erick Rodriguez of Tyler, "Wild Dreams," graphite drawing.
Second Place – Lisa R. Horlander of Tyler, "Enshroud," mixed media sculpture.
Third Place – Brittany Lea Taylor of Hallsville, "Focus," acrylic painting.
Honorable Mentions – Carrie Mason Davis of Tyler, "Sling," mixed media installation; Jessica Sanders of Hawkins "Mess in May," ceramic sculpture; Diedra Long Camp of Gilmer, "Out of Line," mixed media collage; and Jamin Charles Shepherd of Longview, "Collision," monoprint.
In addition, Jobeth Cox of Tyler received the Art Excellence Scholarship, an award created to help the non-traditional student, and Joanna Gifford of Tyler received the Christopher Lyon Memorial Scholarship, an annual award that celebrates the passion and dedication of the late faculty member.
The Juried Student Exhibition concludes Friday, Aug. 11. The Meadows Gallery is in The University of Texas at Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and by special appointment.
