The University of Texas at Tyler Holds Physical Education Workshop

The University of Texas at Tyler will present its annual physical education workshop Friday, Oct. 6.

The all-day event begins at 8:30 a.m. in The University of Texas at Tyler Herrington Patriot Center. Cost is $80 for educators and professionals and $40 for college students enrolled in teacher certification programs. Lunch is provided. To register, visit uttyler.edu/hkdept/. Professional development continuing credit will be given for workshop attendance.

This year's featured clinician is Jim DeLine. DeLine brings more than 30 years of physical education teaching experience along with years of presentation experience throughout Texas and nationally.

"Jim is an outstanding teacher, and his passion for kids and the discipline of health and physical education is evident," said UT Tyler professor Dr. Wycliffe Njororai Simiyu, workshop co-coordinator. "He currently teaches physical education in Austin, Texas at Highland Park Elementary School – home of the Scotties. He has the privilege of teaching 675 incredible kinder through fifth grade students. Jim has conducted over 300 workshops and staff development workshops for school districts and afterschool programs throughout the United States. We welcome Jim to the East Texas area."

DeLine was selected as the Austin Independent School District 'Teacher of the Year' in 1995, was twice nominated for 'Texas Physical Education Teacher of the Year,' and he also was awarded the 2005 President's Distinguished Service Award from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. In 2012, he received the Zarrow 'Outstanding Texas Teacher' Award from the UT Austin College of Education and the Coordinated Approach to Child Health or CATCH Champion Award from the Michael and Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living in 2003.

DeLine has authored the CATCH Physical Education Activity Boxes, the Hyperwear Sandbell K-5 Physical Education Resources Guide and the MEND Childhood Obesity Physical Activity Manual – Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It! In addition, he is the contributing author to the Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids or SPARK Programs 3-6 Grade Physical Education & Online Curricula. He also serves on the Development Council for the Online Physical Education Curriculum.
