The University of Texas at Tyler recently announced its collaboration with the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement to help address school safety. The partnership will not only launch the university's Social Emotional Learning research, but also spearhead area school districts' efforts to ensure officials are meeting the social, emotional and academic learning needs of East Texas students.

"We are proud to lead East Texas' Social Emotional Learning efforts with support from Scarlett Lewis and the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement," said Dr. Ross Sherman, UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology Dean. "Research shows that SEL can have a positive impact on school climate and promote academic, social and emotional benefits for students."

Scarlett Lewis has dedicated her life to helping schools implement Social and Emotional Learning after her 6-year-old son Jesse Lewis was murdered in his first-grade classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary, alongside 19 of his classmates and six educators in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.

Lewis will visit with teachers, counselors and staff at Arp, Bullard, Jacksonville, Laneville, Overton, Tyler and Winona Independent School Districts to discuss the benefits of SEL. She will also speak at UT Tyler later this month to help the university engage the East Texas community in the discussion.

"Social Emotional Learning – A Conversation with Scarlett Lewis" will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 29 at the UT Tyler University Center theater.

A member of the prestigious UT System, The University of Texas at Tyler focuses on student success and innovative research in the more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered. With more than 10,000 students, UT Tyler has facilities in Tyler, Longview, Palestine and Houston.
