Erika Gooding of Tyler desires to become a successful certified public accountant so she can incorporate her love of accounting with helping people.

She received an academic scholarship to help her reach that goal. The University of Texas at Tyler graduate student has been awarded $10,000 from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board for the 2018-19 year. Gooding is UT Tyler's first PCAOB student scholar in university history.

"Erika was recently admitted as the first student in our newly implemented Integrated Master of Accountancy Program. She is an excellent student and passionate about learning and gaining accounting and auditing experience," said Dr. Veronda Willis, associate professor and program director.

Gooding recently interned with Saville, Dodgen & Co. in Dallas. She also is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor organization for financial information students and professionals.

Under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, monetary penalties imposed by the PCAOB must be used to fund merit scholarships for students in accredited accounting degree programs. The board established the PCAOB scholarship program to provide a source of funding to encourage outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to pursue a career in auditing.
