Dr. Alex Mendoza, assistant professor of history, was the fall semester speaker at Howard Payne University and has published works.

A part of Howard Payne's Burress Lecture Series, Mendoza gave a lecture titled "The Spirit That Animates Countrymen: Courage and Manifest Destiny in the Age of Jackson" on Oct. 4 to faculty and students, as well as local high school students and community members.

The lecture was based on a formal paper which will be published in an academic journal by the Howard Payne University History Department.

Mendoza also taught two classes at Howard Payne, honors section of history 1310 "U.S. History to 1877" and history 3310 "The Age of Jefferson and Jackson."

His first book, Struggle for Command: General James Longstreet and the First Corps in the West, 1863-1864, (College Station: Texas A&M University Press, 2008) is in press. Expected publication date will be 2008-09.

"Beating the Odds: Mexican American Distance Runners in Texas, 1950-1995" is a chapter authored by Mendoza for the book Mexican Americans and Sports: A Reader in the Athletics and Barrio Life edited by Jorge Iber and Samuel O. Regaldo (College Station: Texas A&M University Press, 2006).
