Dr. Ali Azghani, associate professor of biology, recently served original articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals.

Azghani collaborates with renowned scientists at UT Health Center in Tyler, Pen State University, New York's North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Center and the Laurentian University in Canada.

The article entitled "Intrapleural Activation, Processing, Efficacy and Evolving Tetracycline-Induced Pleural Injury in Rabbits," discussed the potential application of a novel chemical in prevention and treatment of lungs scaring following injury or trauma. This collaborative research involves several scientist including Drs. Idell, Allen, Shetty and Kathy Koenig at the UT Health Center.

Azghani also co-authored a paper in Free Radical Biology and Medicine, entitled "Antioxidants Preserve Macrophage Phagocytosis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa During Hyperoxia."

"Our body equipped to neutralize cancer causing molecules produced by phenomena such as infection and inflammation. This defense mechanism, however, is overwhelmed at times and results in body damage without medical interventions. We utilized cultured human cells and small animal model in this project and showed efficacy and safety of a novel antioxidant drug," said Azghani.

Co-authors included Dympna M.P. Morrow, Tahereh Entezari-Zaher, John Romashko III, Mohammad Javdan, Luis Ulloa, Edmund J. Miller and Lin L. Mantell.
