Dr. Daniel S. Murphree, associate professor of history, was invited to be the fall 2008 Jack Lane Colloquium speaker at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. Named after a long-time member of the Rollins College History faculty, the colloquium is designed to familiarize students and members of the greater Orlando community with scholarly approaches to Florida's history and culture.
On Sept. 29, Murphree presented a talk at the college titled "Constructing Floridians: Meanings and Applications in the 21st Century" which centered on his recent book, Constructing Floridians: Natives and Europeans in the Colonial Floridas, 1513-1783, and its depiction of European-Native American interaction during Florida's colonial period.
While in Winter Park, he also presented a lecture dealing with similar themes to students in a freshman orientation course titled "Culture, Power, and Society: The United States, Florida and the Native Experience from 1700 to 1900" for which his book was assigned.
