Dr. Stephen B. Rainwater, acting chair and Chandler professor of computer science, will serve a two-year appointment as president of the Special Interest Group for Computing Teachers of the International Society for Technology in Education.

As presiding officer of SIGCT's executive board, he will contribute towards the organization’s mission to enhance the expertise of its members and to advocate the teaching of computing as an academic discipline in Pre-kindergarten - 16 education.

With membership of about 5000 educators worldwide, ISTE SIGCT promotes numerous initiatives to improve members' pedagogical practice and technical proficiency in computer science and information technology including professional development training, the Journal for Computing Teachers, and National Educational Computing Conference sessions and workshops and leadership in NCATE accreditation standards for secondary computer science teacher preparation programs.

A UT Tyler faculty member for more than 25 years, Rainwater holds a doctorate in education and a master of science in computer science, both from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He received the 2005-06 Chancellor's Council Outstanding Teaching Award and was named the UT Tyler Piper Professor nominee in 1990.

He also previously served as UT System Faculty Advisory Council member, UT Tyler Faculty Senate president, the computer science representative on the board of directors of the International Society for Technology in Education, president of the Texas Computer Education Association and currently serves as director of the university's Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Sumer Research Academy.
