Entrance Exam Information

7. MSN/MBA students must achieve a minimum score of 500 or more on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and a satisfactory grade-point average overall on prior advanced level (junior, senior, and graduate) work taken. These two indicators of graduate potential, GMAT score and grade-point average, will be used to calculate an index number.

8. Applicants from countries other than the United States must also meet the admission requirements for international students seeking a graduate degree as listed in the University catalog.

9. Consideration for admission is also given to one or more of the following: the applicant’s demonstrated commitment to his or her chosen field of study, socioeconomic background, and involvement and level or responsibility in other matters including extracurricular activities, employment, community service, first generation of family to graduate from an undergraduate program, family responsibility or raising children, multilingual proficiency, or geographic region of residence.

10. Students must demonstrate proficiency in the use of the English language. If a student’s verbal score on the admission examination is below an acceptable minimum, the student must pass an English proficiency test during the first semester in the program. A foreign student must score a minimum of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and have a minimum raw score of 50 on each of the three sections of the examination. Only the TOEFL examination given by the Educational Testing Service is acceptable.

11. Levels of Admissions:
a. Full Acceptance Status: Applicants who have met all admission requirements.

b. Conditional Acceptance Status: Applicants who have met some but not all of the requirements listed above may be accepted into the graduate program on a conditional basis following review by the Graduate Studies Committee. Conditional status may be granted when:
(1) Meets Conditional level, even when entrance exam score below required score;
(2) Below Conditional level, but entrance exam score meets required score.

After the successful completion of 9 semester credit hours of coursework from the
student’s degree plan, full acceptance status will be granted.

c. Probationary Acceptance Status: Applicants who have not met all of the requirements to be admitted either at full or conditional acceptance status may be considered for Probationary Status. Applicants granted probationary status will be required to:
(1) Successfully complete NURS 5308 Contemporary Healthcare Ethics and HECC 5317 Biometric Methods prior to petitioning the Graduate Studies Committee for a change in admission status.

(2) After successful completion of the two courses listed in (1) above, the applicant will submit a petition to the Graduate Studies Committee for a change in admission status.

(3) The Graduate Studies Committee will consider each petition individually. The admission status may be denied, changed to Conditional Acceptance with stipulations regarding the number of courses to be taken, or changed to Full Acceptance.

d. Letters of full, conditional, or probationary acceptance are sent to the prospective graduate student by the appropriate Associate Dean. Students are notified of their assigned advisor in the letter of acceptance, and must confer with their advisor or the Associate Dean prior to registration, and every semester thereafter.

12. MSN-NP students must complete a separate admission request to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC). This admission request will be completed upon the direction of the student's faculty advisor.

Completed  applications to the UT-Tyler graduate program are reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee.  Deadline for filing applications for Fall admission is April 1, and for Spring admission, October 15.

NP students, who have successfully completed the graduate core, are admitted to the TTUHSC competitive clinical tracks in the spring only.  Post-master’s NP students are admitted to the TTUHSC clinical tracks in the fall only.  Applicants' inquiries concerning the program are encouraged.  The Associate Dean for Advanced Practice advises prospective NP students regarding specific program details.
