Service Projects
Iota Nu members have committed to three major service projects over the past few years: the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the Alzheimer Walk, and the Guatemala School of Nursing project. Please click on the links to learn more about these projects and how you might contribute your time and talents to these worthy causes!

Iota Nu and Relay for Life
In 2006, members from Iota Nu visited with faculty and students at the National School of Nursing in Guatemala City:
Guatemala 2006 024
Guatemala 2006 025
Guatemala 2006 028
The need for books, computers, and laboratory supplies was overwhelming and members vowed to assist their nursing colleagues and the Guatemala SON project was born! Thanks to the generosity of Elsevier Publishing and Iota Nu membership, in 2007 chapter members returned to the school and delivered 47 Spanish textbooks to replace the meager collection of books that were decades old. They also delivered two complete computer set-ups to be placed in the library.

The need continues, however! Please see the message from our current Guatemala SON project co-chair, Colleen Harris:
December 1, 2007
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As the holidays rapidly approach we turn our thoughts to gift giving and sharing. This Christmas we offer you an opportunity to give a gift that changes lives by donating to the Iota Nu Guatemala Nursing School Project in honor of a loved one.
Several members of Iota Nu have discovered an opportunity to improve health on a global level. The Escuela Nacional De Enfermeria (The National School of Nursing) in Guatemala City continues to need our help. This past year we were able to replace several 20-year old textbooks and provide two functioning computers to the school thanks to the generosity of our membership. There is still a critical need for lab supplies, additional computers and books, and support for the students themselves.
Our goal is to ultimately improve the quality of health care in Guatemala by giving their nursing students better resources. As I have seen first hand, good healthcare in Guatemala is a rare commodity. By improving the resources of the nursing school, we can contribute to our profession and improve health of people who have limited access to care.
We will update you with the progress of this project through our website located at: www.uttyler.edu/nursing/research/SigmaThetaTau.htm. Please partner with us to help improve nursing and health in Guatemala.
Thank you,
Colleen Harris, BSN, RN

Alzheimier Walk:
In 2007 the chapter elected to participate in another important cause: The Alzheimer Walk. On October 4, Iota Nu members around east Texas participated in their local community walks in Tyler, Longview, and Palestine.
