Intensive English Language Institute (IELI)

UT Tyler's IELI Program assists non-native English speakers to improve their language and culture skills as well as prepare for university matriculation. Organized into two 8-week sessions each semester, the program includes Listening & Speaking; Grammar & Idioms; Reading & Discussion; Writing & Editing/Research; and Support Sessions/Computer Lab. Optional seminars include a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) preparation seminar geared for students who need to become familiar with the Internet-based test (IBT) format and practice English skills and test strategies, as well as a Pronunciation seminar to help students speak more clearly, focusing on stress, intonation patterns, and individual sounds. In addition, specialty seminars such as English for Business, English for Engineering, and English for Nursing are currently in development.

The University of Texas at Tyler is accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC), the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the southern states. In addition, the IELI is recognized by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM). As part of the University, UT Tyler's Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) provides instructional programs critical to UT Tyler's mission, offering current and future international students, scholars and faculty with high-quality English language training and orientation programs. The IELI also offers opportunities for learning, collaboration and research in language acquisition in conjunction with UT Tyler's School of Education, as well as at UT Tyler's Innovation Academy, modeling cutting-edge learning for primary and middle school education.

IELI Attendance Policy and Guidelines
IELI students are expected to attend all classes and remain in class the entire period. IELI instructors record absences and tardiness daily. Students arriving more than 15 minutes late to class will be counted tardy. Three (3) late arrivals to class are equivalent to one (1) absence. Students with five (5) unexcused absences will be dropped from the IELI Program.

English Proficiency
Admission to UT Tyler requires a minimum TOEFL score of 79 or IELTS score of 6.5 and 6 or greater in all sub-sections. Admission to a UT Tyler graduate program also requires satisfactory scores on either the GRE or GMAT. The IELI is designed to help prepare students to successfully meet TOEFL requirements and matriculate into the university. For more information contact:  ieli@uttyler.edu
