UT Tyler's IELI Program assists non-native English speakers to improve their academic English language and American culture skills as well as prepare for university matriculation and success in a global environment. Organized into two 8-week sessions each semester, and one 8-week summer session, the program includes Listening and Speaking; Grammar and Idioms; Reading and Discussion; Writing, Editing and Research; as well as strands focusing on entry level American Classroom Culture and advanced level University Preparation, including training in IELI levels 5-7 for the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college.
Optional seminars offered in between regular IELI sessions include preparation seminars for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) geared for students who wish to become familiar with the Internet-based test (IBT) format and practice English skills and test strategies, seminars for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), English Language Development (ELD) seminars focusing on conversation and grammar, and Pronunciation seminars to help students speak more clearly, focusing on stress, intonation patterns, and individual sounds. In addition, specialty seminars such as English for Business, English for Engineering, and English for Nursing are available.
The IELI is designed to help prepare students to successfully meet the university prerequisites pertaining to English proficiency and matriculate into the university. Admission to UT Tyler requires a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 79, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 and 6 or greater in all sub-sections, or Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 53.
Conditional Admission for Undergraduate students: TOEFL, PTE, AND IELTS scores will be waived for students who complete Level 6 of the University of Texas at Tyler Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) with no grade lower than an A or those who complete Level 7 with no grade lower than a B. For specific admissions criteria for UT Tyler, please refer to the International Undergraduate and Graduate Student Admissions descriptions in the UT Tyler Academic Catalog. NOTE: The Educational Testing Service (ETS) code for TOEFL for The University of Texas at Tyler is 6850.
The University of Texas at Tyler is accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC), the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the southern states. The UT Tyler and the OIP IELI are approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). In addition, the IELI is recognized by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM).
As part of the University, UT Tyler's Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) provides instructional programs critical to UT Tyler's mission, offering current and future international students, scholars and faculty with high-quality English language training and orientation programs. The IELI also offers opportunities for learning, collaboration and research in language acquisition in conjunction with UT Tyler's School of Education, as well as at UT Tyler's Innovation Academy, modeling cutting-edge learning for primary and middle school education.
IELI Attendance Policy and Guidelines
IELI students are expected to attend all classes and remain in class the entire period. IELI instructors record absences and tardiness daily. Students arriving more than 5 minutes late to class will be counted tardy. Three (3) late arrivals to class are equivalent to one (1) absence. Students with five (5) unexcused absences occurring during one 8-week period will be dropped from the IELI classes they are enrolled in without the refund of tuition, fees or books.
NOTE: 100% attendance is expected in all Seminar sessions.
Community English Class
The UT Tyler IELI offers a free English class to assist community members with English development skills. The Community English Class is offered every Fall and Spring semester on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 - 5:00p.m.
