Certification of Financial Responsibility (CFR)

SEVIS federal regulations requires students to demonstrate proof of sufficient funds and a sponsor letter (if applicable) in order to qualify for an I-20. 

Change of Status Request

A person of any non-immigrant status except C, D, K, or M (and in some cases J) can apply for a change to F-1 status if they have maintained lawful non-immigrant status up to the time of application. Those with J status who are subject to 212(e) two-year home country physical requirement may not change status in the U.S. unless a waiver has been granted.

Concurrent Enrollment

F-1 students are allowed to enroll in classes at another U.S. school while maintaining valid visa status at UT Tyler. Visa regulations require that you have approval from DSO to enroll at another school while enrolled at UT Tyler. You must also speak to your academic advisor to ensure that your coursework at another school will satisfy degree requirements at UT Tyler. Majority of your courses must be taken at UT Tyler.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Docusign

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an F-1 benefit which allows a student to gain on-the-job experience with an employer in their field of study while earning academic credits toward their degree program. 

If a student qualifies, CPT employment can be part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid, depending on individual circumstances.

Embassy Letter for Graduation Ceremony

Letters are issued for graduating UT Tyler students participating in the commencement ceremonies to provide to their non-U.S. resident relatives who are seeking to obtain a tourist or visitor visa in order to attend their commencement ceremony.

I-765 Online Form for Employment Authorization

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is 12-month work authorization available to F-1 international students who have been full-time students for at least two consecutive semesters and plan to seek employment in the United States in their field of study.

Off-Campus Employment Authorization 

This benefit is provided by USCIS, and allows the F-1 student applicants a year of off-campus work authorization. Severe Economic Hardship-based employment does not have to be in the student’s field of study, but is limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session. The student may work full-time however during all official school breaks. Full-time enrollment must be maintained during the fall and spring semesters.

Program Extension Request

To obtain a program extension, you must show that you have continually maintained status and that the extension is needed for compelling academic or medical reasons, such as a change of major or research topic, unexpected research problems, or a documented illness. Delays in completing your program caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for program extension approval [8 CFR § 214.2 (f) (7) (iii)]. Please send it to your academic advisor's personal work email, not their advising email. Docusign will NOT send it to your academic advisor if you send it to their advising email.

Reduced Course Load Request - Final Semester

Reduced Course Load Request - Medical

A Medical Reduced Course Load permits F-1 students to reduce their course load below full-time (or, if necessary, not enroll in any courses) due to a student's temporary illness or medical condition.  A maximum of 12 months of Medical Reduced Course Load is possible per degree level.

Reinstatement Request

F-1 visa students that violate the conditions of their visa are considered out-of-status. A student who is out-of-status is no longer eligible for F-1 visa status benefits such as on-campus employment, CPT, and OPT. Out-of-status students who wish to continue studying as an F-1 student must apply for reinstatement Alternatively, you may request a new SEVIS record with a new I-20, depart the US and re-enter under a new I-20 with new SEVIS ID, a valid visa, and valid passport.

Report a Change

If you are a current degree-seeking F-1 student at UT Tyler, please submit this form to report a change to your address or phone number within 10 days of the change.

SEVIS Transfer-Out Request

F-1 students transferring out of UT Tyler to another U.S. institution should complete this form and attach a letter of acceptance from your new institution. 

STEM OPT Request

UT Tyler graduates with Department of Homeland Security-designated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) degrees may be eligible for the 24-Month STEM OPT Extension.

Tuberculosis Screening Documentation Form

The University of Texas at Tyler requires all incoming international students and scholars who originate from countries that are considered to be at higher risk for tuberculosis (TB) disease (as defined by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention) to be screened for TB.

Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students

The Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS) award provides a waiver of the nonresident portion of a student's tuition bill. The TAMS award is not a cash award. To be eligible for the TAMS award, you must be a citizen and resident of Mexico who demonstrates financial need, among other requirements. Submit the TAMS application form and the needed supporting documents.
