What is New Patriot Orientation?
Orientation is an informative and fun program that provides incoming students with excellent opportunities to meet people, make new friends, and learn what it takes to be successful at UT Tyler. Students learn about ways to get involved, academic resources, and how to locate things on campus.
When is New Patriot Orientation?
The summer 2013 New Patriot Orientation dates for freshmen are:
- Session 1: June 13-14
- Session 2: July 11-12
- Session 3: July 18-19
- Session 4: August 21-22*
*This session is reserved for Patriots who live more than 300 miles from Tyler, TX
How do I register for New Patriot Orientation?
Students and guests may register here. All admitted freshmen will receive a brochure in the mail letting them know about the orientation program and how to sign up.
Where will I stay during New Patriot Orientation?
Students attending one of our summer orientations will stay at one of the UT Tyler on-campus housing facilities, and will need to bring a pillow, pillow case, bath towel, hand towel, toiletries, and a sleeping bag or twin sheets with a blanket.
Parents and other guests will need to make arrangements for their stay in Tyler. A list of hotels that offer reduced rates for UT Tyler/orientation guests is included below:

How much does New Patriot Orientation cost?
Students: The cost of orientation is assessed on your student bill. All incoming freshmen will be charged a one-time New Student Programs fee of $75. This fee covers orientation, as well the costs of programming intended to support freshman students during their first year.
Guests: The cost is $40 per guest ($20 for guests 16 and under). This fee covers materials, three meals, giveaways, and administrative costs. This fee is refundable up to 5 business days prior to the selected orientation session.
What will I do at New Patriot Orientation?
New Patriot Orientation will:
Inform new students of campus policies and procedures.
Help with the academic and social transition to UT Tyler.
Prepare students to make reasoned and well-informed choices and,
Foster a sense of community by acclimating future Patriots to the UT Tyler campus and surrounding community.
What is the New Patriot Orientation schedule?
Day 1:
10:30 am - 11:30 am Check-In
11:35 am Opening Session
12:40 pm Lunch
1:20 pm – 6:00 pm Afternoon Sessions
6:00 pm Resource Fair
6:30 pm Dinner (day 1 for parents and guests ends after dinner)
7:15 pm Campus Tour
8:30 pm Patriots Poolside
10:30 pm Eagle's Lounge
Day 2:
8:30 am Breakfast
9:15 am Mock Class
10:15 am – 12:00 pm Morning Sessions
12:00 pm Lunch
12:45 pm – 2:45 pm Afternoon Sessions

A confirmation email will be sent to all registered students and guests one week prior to orientation. This email will include schedule details, locations, a campus map and reminders on what to bring.
What should I wear to New Patriot Orientation?
Be prepared to travel to different places around our beautiful campus. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for being outside at times. Suggested attire might be sneakers, shorts or loose pants, and a short-sleeved shirt.
Can family members attend New Patriot Orientation?
Yes! We encourage family members to come and enjoy our orientation sessions designed for parents. Parent sessions will run concurrently with student sessions, and at times we will offer joint programming.
Do I need to attend all the New Patriot Orientation activities?
Yes. If you attend orientation it is important to attend all of the activities offered.
Will I register for my classes at New Patriot Orientation?
Advising and registration is offered before students attend orientation. In fact, all new students are required to meet with an academic advisor prior to attending orientation. To set up your advising and registration appointment please call the Academic Advising Center at 903.565.5718.
