Orientation Information

Dress

The scenic campus of UT Tyler is easy to Navigate.  Wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in and appropriate clothing good for being outside at times.  Suggested attire for the day might be sneakers, shorts or loose pants and a short-sleeved shirt.

Pre-Advising Sessions

All colleges, plus the pre-med/pre-dental program, will be offering pre-advising sessions the day before Orientation.  Starting with a general session in Library Room 401 at 1pm, you and your parents will be able to meet with faculty from your chosen degree program and hear all about your options, prerequisites, and responsibilities as a student of that program.  Although you won't be registered for classes until the day of Orientation, your advising session will go much smoother, and you'll be better prepared to register for classes.  Be sure to check the Pre-Advising option on your registration card if you plan to attend a pre-advising session.  For more information contact the orientation staff at orientation@stemail.uttyler.edu.

Other Advising Information

Student Learning Communities

Learning communities are small groups of students with a common  major who take three classes and a freshman-year experience seminar together.  In Student Learning Communities, students have the opportunity to make friends quickly and develop close relationships with UT Tyler faculty and staff.  The supportive environment created in the UT Tyler learning communities brings students, faculty, staff and peer mentors together with the common goal of promoting academic and social success.  Communities are offered in various academic and interest areas, giving participants the opportunity to explore their major in a small group.  Twelve learning communities will be offered in fall 2005 for students majoring in business, education, engineering (2), nursing, sciences/pre-med, psychology, health and kinesiology, and fine arts.  In addition there are special interest learning communities for athletics, residence life, and community service.  For more information about the Student Learning Community program, visit our website: www.uttyler.edu/slc
