Making an Impact in K-12 Classrooms

With a rich history of educating professionals equipped to deliver quality K-12 education, UT Tyler’s impact reaches across the region and across the generations. The impact of teaching a child to read, encouraging a student to complete high school, or preparing a young adult for success in college cannot be overstated.

The University’s College of Education and Psychology has graduated over 3,000 professional teachers, most of whom have remained in East Texas. In fact, the State has recognized UT Tyler as a leader in graduating teachers who remain in the teaching profession five years after graduation. This may in part be due to the many hours that UT Tyler education students spend in area schools before they graduate. In doing so, they gain valuable expertise and allow East Texas schoolchildren to get extra attention.

It is probably impossible to overstate the value of education to individuals and, indeed, society as a whole. Education enhances all aspects of life quality and is quite important to the economy and future development. The relationship between the level of education and income is striking.

More than classroom teachers, the University provides area school systems with professional counselors, administrators, educational diagnosticians, and psychologists. In addition, research institutes and continuing education programs give the region’s education professionals a multitude of resources for continuous improvement of their schools.

On a typical school day in East Texas, yellow buses traverse city streets and county roads loaded with the region’s future. Whether in large urban school districts or small rural schools, in both public and private classrooms, kindergarten through high school seniors, these students will find UT Tyler there to meet them when the bus doors open and the school bell rings.

The UT Tyler Impact study estimates that one of every five students in East Texas is served by a UT Tyler graduate. UT Tyler graduates are teachers, counselors, principals, and superintendents.

At Chandler Elementary School, the principal, counselor and almost half of the teaching staff are UT Tyler graduates.

UT Tyler grads are critically important to the success of Chandler Elementary, said principal Rhonda McCallie. “I actively seek UT Tyler graduates when I hire personnel for teaching positions because I have found them to have a well-rounded foundation in instructional theory, practice and classroom management skills,’’ she said.

The school was named a 2004 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education for demonstrating high levels of student achievement. “Being named a Blue Ribbon School is the highest honor that can be given to a school, public or private, in this country,’’ McCallie said. “Obviously our teachers had to have received excellent college training to prepare them to be successful teachers.’’
