Funding Your Success -- Your Tuition at Work

The University of Texas at Tyler is a vibrant, growing university that enhances numerous aspects of the lives of all East Texans. We take great pride in the success of our graduates, who are creating solutions in emergency rooms, classrooms and boardrooms every day.

Building upon past successes, we continue to grow faster than our current budget, facilities and resources can accommodate. Although it has increased, state funding has not been able to keep pace with our growth (76 percent) the last several years, and we must seek additional funds in order to hire more faculty and support staff to expand existing academic programs and to initiate new ones.

Your tuition dollars play an integral part in this mission.

Hiring full-time faculty to support emerging academic programs.

  • UT Tyler is has launched its new civil engineering program and has received planning authority for its first two Ph.D. programs – in nursing and human resource development.

Hiring additional faculty and adjunct faculty in a variety of academic programs to provide more course sections and maintain acceptable class sizes.

  • In fall 2006, 55 percent of the new positions were filled by faculty and academic support staff.

Install appropriate classroom technology and add IT staff to enhance and support state-of-the-art learning environments.

  • We are installing wireless Internet access throughout the campus.

Improve library holdings (physical and electronic), computer access, staff and hours of operation.

  • The library has installed wireless Internet, an integrated library system and currently has approximately 60 computers, including 30 laptops, available for student use.

Increase the institutional merit scholarship budget.

  • To date, we have devoted $452,132 of tuition revenue to financial aid.

Increase retention.

  • Our academic advising department has implemented a supplemental instruction program to help students pass difficult entry-level courses.

Also, we plan to use new revenue to:

  • add staff to administer new enrollment management programs,
  • increase funding and support for the intercollegiate athletics program,
  • improve student life with a new tutoring program, greater access to counseling and health services, and
  • increase student activities and intramural and club sports.
