UT Tyler Student Research Poster Competition Winners Announced
Four student-researchers at The University of Texas at Tyler earned awards during the 2009 Student Research Poster Competition held April 24, Dr. Arlene Horne, associate vice president for research and federal relations, announced.
Winning first place, graduate biology student Curtis Clark of Palestine won $200 and an all-expense paid trip to a national meeting to present his research results on “Effects of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Elastase Exposure on Epithelial Tight Junction Structure and Function.”
Abraham Arhin of West Africa, a graduate biology student, won second place and a $100 cash prize for his poster titled, “The Role of Outer Membrane OprQ in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Virulence.” Sheri Sanders of Michigan took third place and a $50 cash prize for “A Reevaluation of the Systematics of the Ouachita Map Turtle, Graptemys Ouachitensis, Subspecies: Evidence from Molecular, Morphological, and Behavioral Data.”
Undergraduate Audrey Hammack of Tyler received honorable mention for “Themophoretic Behavior of Polymers in Temperature-Graded Microfluid I Channels.”
Thirty-nine students previously won internal research grants in December 2008 and presented their findings in the poster competition, which was a first-time event.
Students were awarded up to $500 to cover project-related expenses, such as wages, supplies, equipment and travel. Each student had a faculty sponsor, who was awarded $300 for support of the student project and certified each project’s completion. The UT Tyler Research Council reviewed all proposals.
