Message from the Vice President for Research
Research is a rapidly growing and developing enterprise at The University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler). The success of this endeavor depends on inspired faculty, staff, and students obtaining external funding to support their research, creative, and scholarly activities. At UT Tyler the commitment has been made to create an infrastructure in which research and other scholarly endeavors can thrive.
The purpose of research conducted at UT Tyler is the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge. Student enrollment is increasing at UT Tyler each year. In concert with this increase, new faculty positions are being created which will necessarily augment external research funding. A strong interdisciplinary effort among faculty to achieve their research aspirations must necessarily occur. This effort will be coupled with strategic alliances with other institutions of higher education, health centers, and national research centers. In addition, the research vision of the university is to develop research and public service centers of excellence that will enhance its research and academic standing. These planned centers will target selected areas of inquiry that will lend national and unique distinction to the research under study as well as to the university as a whole.
As the historic origins of UT Tyler as solely a teaching institution are enhanced to include a research enterprise, guidelines and policies are necessary to ensure a balance of academic freedom with the orderly conduct of business. The Research Policies and Procedures provide a framework for this process. These Policies and Procedures will assist faculty and staff in implementing, monitoring, and administering research and other programs funded by agencies external to, as well as internal to, the university. They will also provide the guidance necessary for the conduct of research at UT Tyler and will thereby assist in the achievement of the academic objectives of the university. The Research Policies and Procedures are considered to be, as a whole, a living document so that when they change, corrected information will be issued.
The Office of Sponsored Research at UT Tyler was established to support faculty and staff research and sponsored program funding efforts for their creative and scholarly activities. The goal of the OSR staff is to assist faculty and professional staff in their efforts to secure external funding. The OSR staff provides technical assistance to the researcher during proposal preparation (budget, special instructions, etc.), serves as an information source, monitors compliance with applicable university and sponsor policies, provides training to university faculty, staff, and students, and handles all administrative matters with sponsors, including contract negotiations. The staff reviews proposals before submission to the sponsor and advises the investigator of any omissions, necessary corrections, or other items that might strengthen the presentation of the proposal to the funding agency.
Please feel free to stop by the OSR anytime to ask questions, look for funding opportunities, or just to talk about your research interests. We look forward to meeting with you!
