SI Leaders

Heather Shumake

Courtney LacyHi! My name is Heather Shumake, and I am the SI leader for Dr. Smee's Chemistry 1312, otherwise known as, Gen Chem II. I am currently a sophomore with plans to graduate with a BS in Biology and hopefully go on to medical school. For just a little background info on me, I grew up in the infinitesimally small city of Dekalb, Texas and graduated from Paul Pewitt High School. I relish many hobbies namely reading, writing, studying foreign languages, and music.

I had a wonderful teacher in high school who encouraged and cultivated my interest in chemistry by making the subject interesting and understandable before introducing the challenging aspects. Along with a strong dose of practice and a minor amount of personal responsibility, I was able to acquire a talent and love for chemistry. However, in college I know that everything moves at an accelerated rate with a significantly larger burden of responsibility which can leave students puzzled from the very beginning. My goal is to make chemistry as fun for other students as it was for me. I want students to enjoy it as much as I have, or at least survive it, which is precisely why I became an SI leader. Please feel free to contact me or visit during my office hours for whatever reason, and I will assist you to the best of my abilities.
