Admission to the Program

Any student who meets the requirements for admission to the University of Texas at Tyler will be admitted to the criminal justice program.  See the University Catalog for University admission requirements.

Lower-Division Preparation

Students at other higher education institutions preparing for transfer to the criminal justice program at UT Tyler should complete a much as possible of the 42-44 semester credit hour General Baccalaureate Degree Requirements specified in the University Catalog.  An additional three hours of survey of literature is required, which also fulfills the "Humanities" general education requirement.  Students may transfer to UT Tyler up to 64 lower-division semester credit hours which may include no more than twenty-one lower division hours in criminal justice courses.  Students are strongly urged to study Spanish to enhance employment opportunities.

Degree Requirements

The Bachelor of Science with a major in criminal justice requires completion of 124 semester credit hours, at least 60 of which must be upper-division (junior and senior level).  A complete list of degree requirements is listed in the criminal justice section of the University Catalog.  The sixty-upper level hours taken at UT Tyler have the following components:

A. Thirty hours of criminal justice courses including:

CRIJ 3300    The Criminal Justice System (for students without 12 hours of lower-division criminal justice)

CRIJ 3310    Ethical Issues in Criminal Justice

CRIJ 3311    Administration of Criminal Justice Agencies

CRIJ 3320    Criminology

CRIJ 4322    Criminal Law

CRIJ 4322    Criminal Justice Research Methods

CRIJ 4341    Criminal Procedure

 

B.  A minor in an approved discipline or a customized minor of at least 18 hours of guided electives designed to support the students goals as a criminal justice professional.

 

C.  At least 12 hours of elective courses.
