Office For Student Success

Dr. Lou Ann Berman, Assistant Vice President for Student Success

Sue Gossett, Administrative Associate

Student Success seeks to provide pathways that promote academic and personal achievement for all students attending UT Tyler. The outcome measure for all of our programs is student success: academic success, professional success and personal success. Please contact our office today and let us know how we can make your Patriot experience more successful for you. 903.565.5674 or 903.566.7052

Academic Advising Center
The Academic Advising Center serves all entering freshmen students as well as all transfer students who have not completed their core curriculum coursework. Advisors meet individually with students to guide them with course selection, semester schedules and degree requirements. Interested freshmen may join a Student Learning Community (SLC) based on their declared major at the time of course selection for their entering fall semester.  The Academic Advising Center works with the Patriot Academic Support Center to enroll students in the SLC program.  The Academic Advising Center also collaborates with the Office of Career Services and the Office of Student Services to help students select a career choice and major.  Second semester freshmen interested in participating in the Timely Graduation Contract program should visit with their academic advisor during their first fall semester to learn more about this opportunity for a financial rebate upon graduation.  Students on academic probation are strongly encouraged to participate in the collaborative "Mentoring and Advising Patriots for Success" (MAPS) Program administered through the Academic Advising Center.  MAPS students work with an advisor to develop a personalized Student Success Plan and meet with other campus resources based on individualized educational goals.   The Academic Advising Center is open 8:00 - 5:00, Monday through Friday. 903.565.5712  http://www.uttyler.edu/advising

Patriot Academic Support Center (Supplemental Instruction & Student Learning Communities)

Supplemental Instruction

The Academic Support Center provides opportunities for students to obtain peer led assistance for successful course completion. The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program is provided in courses that have been identified by the university as particularly rigorous. SI Leaders attend the classes with students and then meet with students outside of class to review study techniques, learn testing strategies and review other success skills that are known to be effective for college students. The SI Leaders participate in pre-service and in-service workshops on effective group management techniques, learning styles, and classroom "best practices" to enable them to hold effective SI sessions.  903.565.5727 http://www.uttyler.edu/si

Student Learning Communities

UT Tyler Student Learning Communities (SLC) are small groups of freshmen students that attend two or more classes together as well as a weekly SLC session.  Students involved in the SLC program have the opportunity to quickly make friends, develop study groups and form a relationship with UT Tyler faculty and staff members.  Each SLC has a peer mentor (an older student with the same major) and a faculty/staff mentor to help the student make social and educational connections.  Most importantly, SLC students can explore their major in a small group setting. 903.565.5727  http://www.uttyler.edu/slc/index.htm

Residence Life and Judicial Affairs

In addition to the convenient apartment housing that Patriot Village and University Pines offer, our new Ornelas Residence Hall officially opened in August, 2006. The new facility features modern accommodations that reflect the needs and interests of today's college student. The office of Residence Life provides a variety of extracurricular programs and leisure activities that promote community and enhance the campus life. This office also conducts the judicial affairs for students to ensure that all students are afforded a positive experience while attending UT Tyler. 903.566.7008   http://www.uttyler.edu/housing

Student Development

Whether a student is interested in attending new student orientation, participating in student government, becoming active in one of approximately 80 student organizations and clubs, developing personal leadership potential, becoming a member of a Greek community or just wanting to find out the latest event sponsored by the College Activities Board, this is the office that serves as the hub for student life.  903.565.5645   http://www.uttyler.edu/studentdev

Community Relations
The Office of Community Relations coordinates community service opportunities on campus and in the surrounding community. The service opportunities promote leadership development in addition to providing a broader awareness of social issues.  This office sponsors a community-wide volunteer fair each semester so that students may meet with representatives from non-profit agencies to learn more about their services and clients. The contact information for area non-profit agencies and current volunteer opportunities is available on the Community Relations homepage. 903.566.7050   http://www.uttyler.edu/community

Parent Resource Center

The Parent Resource Center serves as a centralized point for parents and families of students to more fully share in the college experience of their student. Special parent events are included during Freshman Orientation and during Homecoming activities.  A parent's web site provides information on current events and special opportunities. 903.566.7050   http://www.uttyler.edu/parentcenter

Career Services

The Office of Career Services assists students and alumni to identify personal interests and strengths, select and evaluate career opportunities related to the educational major and to evaluate national trends and forecasts on career options. Students may request assistance in the development of a resume and cover letter and are encouraged to participate in Mock Interviews to strengthen interview skills.  Students and alumni may research prospective employment opportunities in the Career Resource Library. Students may self-register to an online database of jobs listings that include campus employment at PatriotJobs, using their UT Tyler student ID.  Students may also access 1,500+ Occupational Vault Industry Overviews and hiring information in the Vault Online Career Library website at http://www.uttyler.edu/careerservices/students.  Additionally, the Office of Career Services hosts special events throughout the year including Career Fairs, Career Success Seminars, a Dress for Success Student Fashion Show and an Etiquette Dinner.
