Veterans Resource Center
Message From the Coordinator
Hello to Tyler, Longview, Palestine, and HCC in Houston! My name is Chris Cox and I am the Coordinator of Veterans Affairs for UT Tyler. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and welcome you to our university.
I am a U.S. Army Veteran who deployed to Haiti during Operation: Uphold Democracy. I have my B.S. and M.S. from UT Tyler and met my wife here as well.
There are three main focuses of my job: 1) All student Veterans and dependents needs; 2) community: building, networking, job opportunities; 3) faculty/staff: ensuring you have as smooth a transition as possible. There is a strong emphasis on the Five Pillars which are: health, mental well-being, education, jobs and leadership.
The VRC certifies all VA benefits with the exception of TA. We intake all Veteran related documents and help ensure that you have everything you need to use of benefits. Everything we require document wise is for a reason: to help protect you.
We will do everything in our power to make sure you are set up for success. We have peer-to-peer mentoring and tutoring in addition to the numerous UT Tyler services. If you need a cup of coffee, a study guide, a place to study or a place to network, the Veterans Resource Center is the place for you.
We want you to find that missing camaraderie here at UT Tyler. Our staff is comprised of Federal Work-Study student Veterans, so they are all aware of the struggles that you have faced and will face. The Student Veterans Organization is an amazing group who participate in community service each semester also have group meet-ups to have fun and network.
Our certifying team is comprised of two full time staff members that are both prior service Veterans who have personally used military benefits.
I would like to take a moment to recognize the Veteran alumni that we have out there. The VRC is here for you too! If we can help you in any way, just let us know. We also encourage you to get involved. We would love to talk to you about creating or adding to scholarships, mentoring, bringing in job opportunities, or just stopping by to share some stories.
