Wellness and Prevention Education Programs

Wellness and Prevention Education Services are available for all currently enrolled students of The University of Texas at Tyler.  Certain programs, such as health fairs and presentations are also open for UT Tyler faculty and staff.  Programming and services are provided upon request on the Longview and Palestine campuses.

Presentations regarding wellness issues are available upon request during orientation, through various classes, in campus housing, to athletes, fraternities and sororities, and to the general student population throughout the year.  Resource tables are also set up with handouts during orientation, resource fairs, and outreach days.

The following programs are offered through Wellness and Prevention Education Services:

Acquaintance Rape/Sexual Assault Prevention Education - to increase awareness of sexual assault and partner violence issues related to on and off campus safety.  Counseling for victims of any type of sexual assault is available to students through Wellness and Prevention Education Services and the Student Counseling Center.

Alcohol/ Drug Abuse Prevention Education - to increase awareness of the negative consequences of substance abuse and to assist in making responsible decisions in regards to alcohol and other drug use. Alcohol/drug abuse referral assistance is provided to students through Wellness and Prevention Education Services and the Student Counseling Center to locate treatment settings that will accommodate individual needs.


Education for Other Health-Related Issues - topics that may affect university-level students (nutrition, exercise, stress, eating disorders, etc.) are presented to students through various means such as displays, presentations, health fairs and others.

Peer Education - Wellness and Prevention Education works with various student groups interested in educating their peers on any of the above issues. University Mother's Against Drunk Driving (UMADD) and Campus Assault Response Effort (CARE) student organizations are advised by Wellness and Prevention Education.

Personal Counseling - A licensed professional counselor coordinated through the Student Counseling Center is available to provide a variety of services for a wide range of concerns in a trusting and confidential setting. For more information see the Student Counseling Center webpage.

Sexual Responsibility Education  - to increase awareness of topics such as STDs/STIs, consent, and abstinence in order to encourage responsible decision-making regarding sexual issues among students.
