Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

February 18, 2008

Dear Community Member:

As you may be aware, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the peer educators at

the University of Texas at Tyler have committed themselves to raising awareness by

organizing an unusual walk on our campus on Saturday, April 12, 2008. This is our inaugural

year and we are looking to the surrounding community to help us start this tradition on the

right foot.

In an effort to unite the community around this cause, we would like to invite you to

participate in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop

Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence.  There is an old saying, "You can't really

understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes”. Walk a

Mile in Her Shoes asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled (or flat) shoes.

It helps men better understand and appreciate women’s experiences, thus changing

perspectives, helping improve gender relationships and decreasing the potential for violence.

We are asking community businesses, organizations, or individuals to form a walk team with

the goal of fundraising for this great cause and participating in the walk on Saturday, April 12.

While the walk is open to both men and women, we want to encourage your team to identify

as many males as possible to participate.  We suggest you consider husbands, sons,

co-workers, brothers, boyfriends, friends, etc.

This event is being coordinated by the student organization C.A.R.E. and the Wellness and

Prevention Education Office.  C.A.R.E is an organization of peer educators who assist with

programming on topics such as personal safety, healthy relationships, and sexual

responsibility. C.A.R.E. students are part of the Campus Assault Response Effort, a

proactive program that includes aggressive ongoing education/ prevention efforts for students,

faculty, and staff as well as coordinated intervention efforts in the event of a sexual assault.

C.A.R.E. creates a network of campus and community coordinated partnerships (law

enforcement, counseling, legal and medical) for a seamless response for victims of assault.

C.A.R.E. is a comprehensive approach to campus violence that includes sexual misconduct,

dating violence, stalking, and domestic violence. The proceeds from this event will go to the

C.A.R.E. student organization.

Attached you will find event details, registration forms, pledge sheet, and flyers. If you are

interested in walking, please fill out and fax the completed form to 903.566.7242; email to

Kim_Harvey-Livingston@uttyler.edu on or before Friday, March 7.

If you have any questions or need any additional information, please feel free to contact us by

phone at either 903.566.7067 or 903.566.7179 or e-mail our advisor Kim Harvey-

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, April 12!

Sincerely,
