Record-Setting Growth

After becoming a four-year institution, UT Tyler added new programs, facilities and campus activities to accommodate the growing student population and engage freshmen and sophomores. Enrollment rose from about 3,600 to over 6,200 from 2000 to 2009.

The University Center was expanded and new residential housing opened. UT Tyler also constructed the Louise Herrington Patriot Center, a health and kinesiology physical education complex including a fitness center, gymnasium, outdoor swimming pool and an academic wing. The university began competing in NCAA Division III sports and constructed the UT Tyler Ballpark, Irwin Baseball Field and the Citizens 1st Bank/Perkins Soccer Complex. UT Tyler also established its first PhD program, in nursing.
