Big Data in Healthcare

Answering questions that matter to the health of East Texas

As healthcare adopts new technologies, the influx of patient and population data offers potential insights into patient safety quality and health outcomes. However, clinicians, researchers and faculty often lack the training needed to effectively analyze these large datasets. The UT Tyler Institute for Health Innovation, Data Science, and Research hopes to help bridge that gap and provide data and information to the community to answer questions that matter to the health of East Texas.

The institute provides an advanced analytics data science lab to:

  1. Support research and curriculum development in data science, secondary data analysis and advanced analytics.
  2. Provide interprofessional education and development opportunities for faculty, students and researchers.

Our Vision

To improve patient safety, clinical quality and population health outcomes within East Texas using data and technology for health innovation and data science.

Our Mission

Establish robust partnerships with hospitals, health departments and community-based organizations to use health and community data to eliminate health disparities in East Texas.

Greater Longview Optimal Wellness Initiative (GLOW): GLOW aims to improve the health and wellness of residents in the Greater Longview area and surrounding communities through collaborative efforts with major stakeholders in the community representing hospital systems, primary care, behavioral health, first responders, and community organizations.

The Institute supports the program with data management, automation and program evaluation.

Create nationally recognized training programs that develop competencies in data science and advanced analytics in the health professions workforce.

Nursing Students, Medical Residents and Internships Training Workshops: The Institute has supported training workshops for nursing students, medical students and residents to learn various analytic tools and data sources for improving care and the health of populations.

Establish and grow externally funded and nationally known research programs by developing interprofessional teams that use data science and advanced analytics to address health disparities and health outcomes in East Texas.

Stroke Research: Stroke is a top five cause of death in both Northeast Texas and the state as a whole. The Institute is currently supporting research on the social determinants of health that can lead to negative outcomes of stroke, particularly mortality.

Use data and technology to support clinical improvement and innovation strategies across East Texas.

COSMOS, Epic, UT Houston: The Institute is working with regional organizations to utilize electronic health record data to inform better care for the region.

Who Do We Serve?

We regularly partner with local hospitals, health departments and community-based organizations to gather data. But currently, interprofessional education, development opportunities and research assistance are limited to UT Tyler faculty, students and researchers.

Where Are We Located?

While much of the work of the Institute is done virtually and within the community, there are two physical data science labs under the institute: one 6-seat lab is located in the Biomedical Research Center at the UT Health East Texas North Campus and another 20-seat lab located within the School of Nursing on the UT Tyler academic campus.
