Program Overview

Practitioners in the field of Occupational and Environmental Medicine recognize that work and the work environment can have favorable or adverse effects on the health of the workers and other populations. The nature or circumstances of work can be arranged to protect workers’ health. Occupational medicine exists to provide health and well-being in the workplace and ensure workers’ physical attributes or limitations are accommodated in job placement.

Occupational and Environmental Medicine residents enter the program at the second year of their post-graduate training. Residents receive a combination of didactics and supervised practical training to prepare them for independent practice of occupational medicine as well as a Master of Public Health degree. Occupational and Environmental Medicine is the area of specialization in preventive medicine that focuses on the following:

  • Relationship between health of workers, job tasks and work environment
  • Employee’s ability to perform work-related tasks
  • The arrangement of work
  • Physical, chemical and social environments of the workplace
  • Prevention and management of work-related injuries and diseases

The goal of the Occupational & Environmental Medicine Residency program is to provide the academic and practicum components of training which enable the graduate to practice the specialty competently and independently.

Some of the rotations that are available within this program include: Concentra, Eastman Chemical, LyondellBasell, MD Anderson Cancer Center, North East Texas Public Health District, North Texas Poison Center, Shell Health Services, Texas Department of State Health Services, and several specialties within the UT Health East Texas System.

Our program utilizes ERAS for accepting applications, Thalamus for scheduling interviews, and NRMP for the match process. Please note our program will have three tracks available:

  • The Physician R track - 3626382R0 - should be used if you already have the required one year of prior ACGME accredited training with at least 10 months direct patient care and are applying to attend our program 07/27-06/29.

  • The Physician R track - 3626382R1 - should be used if you have already completed a residency and MPH program and are applying to attend our program 07/27-06/28.

  • The Advanced A track - 3626382A0 - should be used if you are needing the required one year of ACGME training with at least 10 months of direct patient care for AY27-28 in another program and are applying to attend our program 07/28-06/30.
