Slips Trips and Falls

6 Ways to Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls

Slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of injury on agriculture, forestry, and fishing operations. Here are 6 ways you and your crew can prevent falls:

  1. Ladders are used frequently around the farm or other operations, make sure someone is available to spot you while climbing on, off, and while working from the ladder. You can work more efficiently and confidently when you are worried about the ladder staying put. Avoid standing on the very top rung or platform of the ladder.
  2. Non-slip shoes are imperative when climbing on and off ladders, equipment, or wet/muddy surfaces. No matter how careful you are, a slick surface and smooth-soled shoes are a bad combination and will likely lead to an incident occurring.
  3. Observe your surroundings and make sure you take note of anything that could be a potential hazard. This could include loose railings, cluttered walkways, or slick surfaces due to mud or water. Stop and make the repair before continuing work.
  4. Declutter the work area and make sure there are no loose wires, ropes, or parts on the ground that could cause someone to trip. Make sure equipment and tools are placed in their designated spot after use.
  5. Non-slip strips are a low-cost way to prevent slips and trips around your operation. Apply these to ladders, stairs in buildings or equipment, and walkways. Use these in addition to non-slip shoes.
  6. Wear a harness when climbing up or down silos or grain bins. Not only can this prevent entrapment, but it requires you to have someone with you as a spotter in case of slips, trips, or falls on the way up or down.
