Chemistry BS Degree (ACS Certified)

A Sound Foundation for Careers in Science, Medicine and Pharmacy

A bachelor’s degree in chemistry from The University of Texas at Tyler prepares you for a diverse array of careers and educational paths. More than 9,000 companies hire graduates with chemistry or biochemistry degrees. Chemistry and biochemistry are vital to many areas of the economy and serve as key components of our modern society.

Biochemistry is one of the fastest growing and most important areas of modern chemistry. According to Forbes, biochemistry is the second most valuable college major of all majors. In addition, modern medicine requires a significant knowledge of biochemistry, as indicated by changes to the 2015 MCAT exam.

Chemists are active in careers like pharmaceutical design and development, alternative energy research, medicinal research, biotechnology, nanotechnology, forensics and environmental chemistry. A bachelor’s degree in chemistry is also an excellent choice for students planning to continue on to a dental, medical, pharmacy, veterinary or other health-related program.

  • Choose from three chemistry degree tracks: chemistry, chemistry with biochemistry emphasis, or chemistry teacher certification. Each option is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and earns the graduate recognition as an ACS certified chemist.
  • Learn to apply cutting-edge technology in state-of-the-art facilities that are more frequently available in PhD programs.

Graduates of the UT Tyler chemistry and biochemistry program attend graduate school at Stanford University, Ohio State University and other premier PhD-granting institutions. They attend excellent medical programs like UT Southwestern Medical School and Baylor School of Medicine.

They are also employed by such organizations as: The Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab, Los Alamos National Lab, SA Scientific and more.
