International Student Admissions Process

 

Filing Deadlines

All required documents must arrive by the deadline date. Complete applications and all supporting documents must be received in the Office of International Undergraduate Admissions by the posted deadlines.

How to Become a Patriot: International Admissions Criteria

 

International Freshman

  • Student must complete an accredited high school program.
  • Meet the following requirements:
    • Top 25% of graduating class: Automatic Admissions
    • Non-Ranking/Lower 75%: 2.75 GPA

Follow these simple steps, to join the Patriot Family:

  1. Fill out an International Undergraduate Freshman Application on ApplyTexas. Our application opens August 1. 
  2. Send your official High School transcript
    1. If transcript is in native language, you must turn in your original transcript and translated copy.
  3. Send Test Scores:
    1. Students must provide qualifying scores for one of the following English proficiency tests:
      1. TOEFL: 79
      2. IELTS: 6.5
      3. Pearson: 53 
      4. Duolingo English Test: 105
    2. ACT or SAT
      1. ACT or SAT test scores will not be required for the 2021-2022 Academic year. Students are still encouraged to send scores if they are available for class placement purposes.

 

International Transfers

Transfer students must have 30 completed college hours and a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

 

Follow these simple steps, to join the Patriot Family:

  1. Fill out an International Undergraduate Transfer Application.
  2. Send an official copy of all college transcripts.
    1. Transcripts from institutions outside of the United States must be translated (if applicable) and evaluated. Please see our International Admission’s website for accepted evaluate companies.
  3. English Proficiency: Students must provide one of the following:
    1. Students must provide qualifying scores for one of the following English proficiency tests:
      1. TOEFL: 79
      2. IELTS: 6.5
      3. Pearson: 53
      4. Duolingo English Test: 105
    2. Students must make a B or higher in English Composition I and II at an American institution.

 

 

Application Fee

UT Tyler’s international student application fee is $75 and must be paid when you submit your application. The application fee is non-refundable and cannot be waived.

 

Application Deadliness

Please see table above for application deadlines. These are strict deadlines. Applications and supporting documents must be received by the posted deadlines.

 

Appealing an Admissions Decision

Students who do not meet the minimum admission requirements may appeal their admissions decision. Students must submit an Admissions Decision Appeal form and supply supporting documentation to discuss matters and/or barriers that affected their ability to meet admissions requirements. Appeals will be reviewed by the Admissions Appeals Committee. Consideration will be given to a student’s academic, extracurricular, and personal achievements. To start the appeals process, please submit the appeal form to Undergraduate Admissions. Applications for Appeals must be submitted and completed prior to course registration.

 

Applying for an Admissions Scholarship

UT Tyler offers both Competitive and Merit scholarships to incoming Freshman. We also offer a scholarship for incoming Transfers. For more information on scholarships, please visit the International Admissions Scholarships webpage.

To be reviewed for a scholarship, students must submit required documents by the posted deadlines. Students who do not submit required documents will not be reviewed.

 

How to Become a Patriot: Your Next Steps

After you submit your application to UT Tyler, be sure to check the email used in your application regularly. We will begin sending you updates about your application. Sign into your myUTTyler student portal to keep track of your application status and complete any To-Do list items.

Here is a checklist of next steps to complete once you are admitted:

Freshman Next Steps:

  • Log into your myUTTyler student portal and activate your Patriot email. This will also allow you to set up your permanent UT Tyler credentials.
  • Check in with the Office of International Programs for next steps. 
  • Pay your $100 Freshman Confirmation fee here
  • Sign up for Housing in your myUTTyler student portal.
  • Sign up for Orientation and Swoop Camp.
  • Send your bacterial meningitis shot record to Enroll@uttyler.edu.
  • Send in ACT/SAT, AP, or IB test scores and dual credit transcripts.

Transfer Next Steps:

  • Log into your myUTTyler student portal and activate your Patriot email. This will also allow you to set up your permanent UT Tyler credentials.
  • Check with the Office of International Programs for next steps. 
  • Sign up for Housing in your myUTTyler student portal.
  • Sign up for Transfer Orientation.
  • Send your bacterial meningitis shot record to Enroll@uttyler.edu.

Required Documents for Admission

Note that students may be required to submit additional documents upon request by the Office of International Undergraduate Admissions. All materials submitted in the process of applying to the University become the property of the university and will not be returned to the applicant.

 

Proof of English Proficiency

All applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit proof of English language proficiency. TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or DET scores must be less than two years old from the first day of class at the proposed term of entry in order to be valid.

In addition, individual academic programs may require a higher score, or evidence of spoken English language proficiency. Applicants may submit official results of either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Pearson Test of English Proficiency (PTE) or the Duolingo English Test (DET). 

 

English Proficiency Test Scores and Alternative Criteria

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) Institutional Code for The University of Texas at Tyler is 6850. Students must provide one of the following test scores to show English proficiency:

  • TOEFL Scores: 79
  • IELTS Scores: 6.5
  • PTE Scores: 53
  • DET: 105

Alternative Criteria:

  • Students may provide proof of a B or higher in English Composition I and II at an American institution to waive English proficiency testing requirements. 
  • Students who successfully complete The University of Texas at Tyler’s Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) Level 6 or 7 with qualifying scores will satisfy/meet UT Tyler’s English requirement for full admission to an undergraduate program, as long as all other admission requirements have been met.

 

Applicants from the following countries do not need to submit an English proficiency score:

  • American Samoa
  • Australia
  • Bahamas
  • Barbados 
  • Belize
  • Canada (except Quebec)
  • Dominica
  • Grenada 
  • Grand Cayman
  • Guyana
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica

Notice of Admissions

You will receive email and or mail notification of official acceptance from the University.

 

Application Status Check

To check your status and review any outstanding tasks or documentation, follow the link in the email from admissions or type in the URL (http://my.uttyler.edu).

  • In the Sign On box, enter your 10-digit user ID and temporary password. These must be entered exactly as they appeared in the email Admissions sent you (case sensitive).
  • In the Enterprise Menu box (upper left-hand corner), select System Access. (If you do not see this option, select Return to Portal)
  • In the System Access box, select Student Center.
  • The To Do List on the right of the screen shows you all the remaining tasks you must complete.

 

Issuance of I-20

Once a student has been admitted to the university, the Form I-20 will be issued showing the date by which the student must register at UT Tyler. Upon arrival, students must present valid passport, visa, I-94 card, and any former I-20. If the student has not registered by the required date, the UT Tyler I-20 Form will be terminated.
