Nursing Pinning Ceremony

Summer 2020 -- August 8th -- Saturday

About Pinning

The Pinning ceremony is a special event given for graduates every fall, spring, and summer. During this ceremony, graduating nursing baccalaureate students are acknowledged with a UT Tyler nursing pin. 

Students are pinned by a registered nurse of their choice. This RN may be family, friend, or faculty. Per policy, only one person pinning per student.

The ceremony is held in the Vaughn Auditorium at the Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. Students are to enter the left side entrance of the center at 8:00 a.m.to sign in.  Immediately following sign-in, please wait there for instructions for class photos promptly at 10 a.m. Once group photos are taken, immediately report back to check-in location for line-up instructions. All pinners need to arrive by 9:00 a.m. (with the exception of UT Tyler faculty pinners) to prepare for line-up alongside the graduate.  Graduates and their pinner will line-up in alphabetical order per degree level. Ushers will assist. Further instructions regarding the ceremony are provided at that time.

Dress Code (required)

BSN students will adhere to the dress code below. Those not following the dress code will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony.

Men

·         Black slacks (no jeans)

·         Pressed, long-sleeved, white, buttoned down, collared shirt

·         Black, dark gray, or navy tie

·         Black dress shoes (no tennis/running shoes)

·         White lab coat. Nursing patch is worn on the left, upper chest (over heart).

Women

·         Black slacks (no jeans or leggings) or black knee-length or longer skirt

·         Pressed, long-sleeved or ¾ length, white, collared shirt

·         Flat or low heeled, closed or peep toe, black shoes (no sandals)

·         White lab coat. Nursing patch is worn on the left, upper chest (over heart).

Any requests to deviate from this dress code policy (i.e. religious restrictions) must be approved in writing by the Executive Director of the School of Nursing.

Ceremony Reservation and Stage Cards (required)

Graduates must complete the below submission form for the pinning ceremony. Submitted information is used for announcing the graduate and their pinner. The deadline to complete the below form is April 17th. Please submit one form per graduate.

Nursing Pins (optional)

Deadline to order -- February 16, 2020

Each student is given a ribbon at sign-in. The nursing pin needs to be securely attached to ribbon.

·         Baccalaureate nursing pins may be ordered through J. Brandt Company. Your final semester instructor will provide order information.

·         Sigma Theta Tau purple ribbons will be provided at check-in.

Class Motto (optional)

Each semester students are asked to vote for the class motto. Please complete the below submission form by April 1st.

Class and Individual Photos (optional)

Class photos will be taken promptly at 9 a.m., located at the Cowan Center outdoor fountain (if weather permits). Individual photos are taken onstage during the ceremony.

Class and Individual photo purchasing options will be provided before the ceremony.

 

International Students

For students who have non-US citizen family members who may want to attend pinning and graduation, the SON can generate a letter to the US Embassy/Consulate on the students’ behalf to allow for travel visa(s) for these events.  Please submit the following criteria to Ms. Jaime Romero at jromero@uttyler.edu:

The information for these letters will need to be submitted at least two months prior to graduation.

Pledge

The following pledge will be recited at the end of the pinning ceremony. Please read and familiarize yourself with it.

University Graduation and Hooding Ceremony

Information regarding fall and spring graduation for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences is located at University Graduation CeremonyThere is no summer University commencement. All summer graduates have the option to return in fall for participation.

Note:  Certificate students are not eligible to participate in the University graduation commencement. Attendance is for degree students only (bachelors, masters, doctoral). 

Graduate must wear caps and gowns at this ceremony. All master’s and doctoral degree students will be hooded during the graduation ceremony. If you are a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the honor cord (students can also wear the Sigma Theta Tau sash in place of the cords) is worn over the gown (the wearing of sorority sashes and other social organization adornments are not allowed). For students graduating with honors, you will receive the appropriate cord when you check in.

Students in NSNA have also been given permission to wear their cords to graduation.
