Biography
A native of Southern California, percussionist JOSHUA BOWMAN currently serves as the
Director of percussion and Spirit Bands at UT Tyler. Prior to his appointment at UT
Tyler, he served as Assistant Director of Bands/Percussion instructor at the University
of Virginia and as the Director of Percussion and Assistant Director of Athletics
Bands at Christopher Newport University from 2013-2017.
An active performer and educator, Joshua has presented recitals and clinics throughout
the United States for high school and college music programs, All-State and regional
honor bands, music education conferences, and PAS Days of Percussion. His Primary
performance area is in contemporary solo and chamber music, orchestral repertoire,
and electro-acoustic music that explore the use of live and fixed media elements.
In the area of research Joshua has a vested interest in percussion pedagogy and education.
As a performer, he served as principal percussionist and timpanist for the ProMusica
Chamber Orchestra of Columbus Ohio from 2007-2014. During his tenure with ProMusica
Joshua was fortunate to collaborate with soloists, conductors, and composers on new
and groundbreaking repertoire in the orchestral world. In addition to his work with
ProMusica, he is regularly engaged as a percussionist with the Indianapolis and the
Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
Joshua’s education credentials include a Masters and Doctorate from the Indiana University
Jacobs School of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree from California State University,
Fullerton. His primary teachers have been Kevin Bobo, Gerry Carlyss, Anthony Cirone,
Steve Houghton, Todd Miller, Michael Spiro, and John Tafoya.
