What attracted you to this field?

While working as a therapist within the hospital setting back in 2013, I also decided to take on a PRN opportunity within home health, honestly just out of curiosity. I discovered a whole new world and a love of working with patients in the comfort of their own homes. I began to envision myself doing it on a full-time basis. I began classes at UT Tyler in August 2016 towards my MBA because I desired to own my own business and needed the appropriate knowledge base required in this day and age.

Why did you choose UT Tyler?

I primarily chose UT Tyler because of its reputation and association with the University of Texas system. I received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas back in 2003, so I knew that by doing so, I would undoubtedly be receiving a top-notch education and graduate degree.

What do you like most about UT Tyler?

I enjoyed the professors and how “down to earth” they were. At one point, my home became temporarily uninhabitable due to water damage from winter weather, so my family and I were forced to live in a hotel for nearly a month. This was around the time of my final exams, so I had to take an incomplete grade. But, Dr. Caldas was so extremely understanding and worked with me for months to ensure that I received a passing letter grade in order to graduate on time.

What are your career aspirations?

I am currently self-employed by providing contracted therapy services on behalf of home health agencies. In the future, I hope to expand my real estate business, including opening a residential assisted living/memory care facility in the surrounding areas.

What’s your work experience?

I have over 11 years of experience of providing therapy within the acute care hospital setting, hand therapy, skilled nursing, and home health settings.

Do you have any advice to pass along to other students interested in this program?

We are living in a time when being able to work in a capacity of being either self-employed or having a management background is essential for upward mobility. My MBA from UT Tyler is opening doors that might not otherwise have been opened. It was tough, but one of the best decisions that I could have made for myself and my family’s future.
